There was an outstanding turnout for the first Uptown Community Meeting of 2010!
We met at Alcenia’s Restaurant and the place was packed. The staff at Alcenia’s was outstanding and served up some of the best southern food you’ll find anywhere. Alcenia’s is located at 317 N. Main St. on the southern edge of Uptown. If you’ve never stopped in, you really need to put Alcenia’s on your list of places to try. You won’t be disappointed.
At the meeting we heard from:
- John Vines – President of the Memphis Rotary Club – Mr. Vines discussed the partnership Uptown has formed with the Rotary Club and some of the great projects we have worked on together. You can learn more about the Memphis Rotary Club HERE.
- Richard Rieves – Pastor of (the newly formed) Downtown Presbyterian Church – Mr. Rieves talked a little about the goals and mission of this new church and their desire to be connected to the community! You can learn more about Downtown Presbyterian Church HERE.
- Michael Whaley – Lead Founder of Memphis College Prep Elementary School (opening in Uptown in the fall of 2010) – Mr. Whaley gave an overview of the new charter school and a schedule of upcoming events. You can learn more about Memphis College Prep Elementary HERE.
- Alex Mobley - Uptown Partnership – Ms. Mobley gave an update on some of the commercial development progress, noting that plans are still in the works for the retail center including a bank, pharmacy, restaurant, and eventually a grocery store. Each of these developments are waiting for land use issues to be resolved prior any further progress.
The remainder of the meeting was a discussion on ways to get involved in Uptown for 2010. We are currently in the process of forming four “Community Teams”. Each of these teams will help coordinate, organize, and promote a specific part of life in Uptown.
We are recruiting Uptown residents to join one (or more) of the following teams:
- Uptown Social Team: will be involved in planning, coordinating, and promoting social events in Uptown
- Uptown Service Team: will be involved in organizing, participating in, and promoting service projects in Uptown
- Uptown Safety Team: will meet & communicate regularly to discuss issues related to safety in Uptown
- Uptown Newsletter Team: will be involved in the production and publication of the Uptown Newsletter - On the Front Porch
The community meeting provided us with several willing Uptown residents, but we still need more Uptowners to join one of these “Community Teams”. If you’re interested in joining, just click HERE to fill out this quick online form.
Special thanks go out to: Alcenia’s Restaurant, Tanja Mitchell and Alex Mobley, and all of the Uptown residents who came out!
Below is a message from Michael Whaley, Founder of Memphis College Prep – a newly approved charter school slated to open in the fall of 2010 right here in Uptown!

I am extremely proud of the work the Supervisors and Officers at South Main Station and Entertainment District Unit did during the year of 2009. With the exception of the increase in Homicides, we were down in all categories. I am especially pleased with the reduction in residential burglaries. The South Main Station led the city with its 23.6 % reduction in overall crime for the year of 2009. I know that we will continue to have success due to the great working relationships we have with both the Business and Residential Communities.

– I am an investigator of the paranormal research group G*H*O*S*T Ghost Hunters of Southwest Tennessee and live here in Uptown – also known as Greenlaw. If you think you might have a “ghost,” or have things that go bump in the night, we offer 100% free investigations by qualified researchers. As you all may well know, our neighborhood is rich in history. Greenlaw was the oldest suburban neighborhood in the city of Memphis. John Rice Grant owned the land in 1789, but Indians killed John in 1797. The deed to the land was then given to John Overton and his partners – Andrew Jackson and James Winchester. They in turn sold the parcels to the Greenlaw brothers.
Since then, Greenlaw has seen its share of historic events. Many were tragic -slavery, yellow fever epidemics, civil war, and the great flood of 1912. Over the last few decades, the area has succumbed to urban blight. Only a scattering of the old homes and businesses remain standing today. Where once Victorian mansions completed the cityscape, modern townhouses now reign supreme.
While these old residences and businesses have been replaced with newer homes, quite often spirits still “live” in the locations. Due to the nature of the history of our neighborhood, there are many of the precursors in place that seem to prompt paranormal activity. If you have been experiencing any strange occurrences, or feel that you may have a spirit in your home or business, please contact us: www.tennesseeghost.com
We use scientific equipment to validate and capture paranormal activity – similar to the TV shows. We are registered with the state of Tennessee and Shelby County and are also insured. Our team conducts investigations in residential and commercial properties. We are local folks with spouses and children who just enjoy and have a passion for ghost hunting. Please contact us at our website: www.tennesseeghost.com or call 901-722-9101.
Once again, our services are 100% free.
